The Flapper

Through history there's always been rebels of world, flappers had been the rebels of society in the twenties. Fashion currently was a very good indicator from the change the country was undergoing. Women in this time period ignored traditional perform and costume; they used smaller, even more revealing items of clothing. Flappers were a huge influence inside the 1920's simply by helping the American woman open up and be more impartial and by strenuous the same equality as men. Flappers inspired women in the decades to find shaping the ‘new woman' of contemporary society by their methods of dressing and acting, and by giving America a different point of view of women (Mccleary).

The 1920's came with a whole lot of changes in fashion. A flapper was a woman in the twenties who had been fashionable and disregarded traditional behavior and ways of lifestyle and was young and dangerous (Swartz). The name Flapper comes from the sound " their very own galoshes unfastened [made] " flapping” as they walked” (Johnson). These girls had completely changed in the previous generation; they danced, smoked, consumed, went to jazz music clubs and flaunted themselves in a new style of apparel (Johnson). Flappers " defied their parents by wearing cosmetic, eyeliner, powder and lipstick” (Roach). Flappers had brief bobbed locks and wore short skirts halting just below the knees, dresses that concealed body shapes and " wore loose fitting sweatshirts to further minimize the appearance of their particular breasts” (Johnson and see fig. 1).
